Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
