Whenever a major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
