European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.
